Centered?

Do you center your life around any one thing/ goal/ or person?  If so, what is it and what effects has it had on your life?   If you cannot think of one for yourself, describe someone you know (with a pseudonym) who is in this situation and what effect it has had on others around him/ her.

  1. My life is centered around work. This has been the way since my grandfather and my father. Work always came in the number one slot and nothing could replace it. This has already taken a toll physically on my body. My back is screwed up and my knees are shot, but work still comes first no matter how bad you hurt.

    1. Do you ever think you work too hard?

    2. It's good to work and be responsible, but too much just isn't healthy. Even if someone might be be disappointed, you should do what's better for you. Unless you enjoy working like this, then do what makes you happy.

    3. Does your work take up majority of your time? Or do you use the pain and time spent as a motivator to keep going?

      Delete
    4. Work does take up most of my time. The pain really hurts some days but you have to push through it to get the job done. I love what I do. A person who loves his job never works a day in his life.

    5. That last sentence kind of threw me off. Do you mean, a person who loves his job never works a day in his life, because it's not like a job? Is it more like an entertainment?

      Delete
    6. Not like entertainment, more like it doesn't feel like a "job" but something he loves to do..

  2. I don't center my life around one specific thing, or person. I center my life around a bunch of things, such as my family, my two jobs, and my phone. The effects that it has on my life are that I depend on those things a lot. MI depend on my family to supply me with shelter and food, my phone I depend on to call my mom and my boyfriend, and I depend on my job to pay for everything I want or need to buy.

    1. In my life my phone could be the last thing I need. Family come 2nd on my list because work is still number 1.

      Delete
    2. I can see why you say that, but what if something were to happen to you? Your co-workers aren't going to be the ones there for you, your family will.

      Delete
    3. I believe your phone is the most priority. It's good you know family is first.I understand work is an importance but having one job is enough and you have to know that your school work should come first then your work.Neither way centering your life on family, phone and work is okay to do.

      Delete
    4. In that case your family is there to help you when you are not able to work.

    5. I agree Mdutan, but I think I'm doing a very good job juggling between school and both jobs.

  3. I have centered my life around one thing. It was my dog Dixie. She was the best dog I ever had. Sometimes the effect were bad. She became too attached to me. When I would leave for school she would get sick or get really depressed. Also she would go to the bathroom in the house when I’m not home. Other times it was a good thing. She would listen to all the time. She would never misbehave when I was at home. She was also very protective over me. If someone was going to hurt me or looked like they were going to, she would get in the middle and bark at them. She was the best dog ever.

    1. I can totally relate to you on this I don’t center my life around my dog Lucas but he does mean a lot to me. He is also really protective of me which sometimes i think it can be jealousy but I do love my dog!

    2. I believe you mean that your dog centered her life around you! Not sure if you two really understand what you are answering.

  4. I wish I would have a dog like that but I have a turtle which won't protect you and is always going to the bathroom in the house (haha). The turtle is just there, you can't do anything with it.

    3. I have centered my life around a video game that involves money that you use money to buy items and stuff. It had some minor effects like I did not drink much water and just wanted to play the video game.

    4. I love playing video games, but I don't need that in my life.

  5. I really don’t center my life around one thing all the time for example in the winter I center my life around wrestling. Wrestling effects my life a lot, it effects me because It take up most of my time in winter so I can’t do any thing but it also makes me stronger. Another way it effects me is I have to watch what I eat because if I’m over weight then I can’t wrestle. When the season end I don’t center my life around just one thing.

    1. But wouldn't you say that being good at wrestling is the top priority in your entire life, not just for winter?

  6. My life is centered around my family and close friends. They are the people who have been there since I was only a little guy. Everyone was there when the bad stuff happened to me. I am not going to explain the bad things that happened, but my family was always there for all of it. Another thing my life is centered around is music. Music is a big part of my life. I love listening, it helps me cope with all the stressors in life. It is my escape from reality.

  7. My brother centered his life on basketball. He was extremely dedicated and worked on it so hard daily. But after he was finished with his season he didn’t really have any friends because he blew them off to practice. And he was dedicated and didn’t have anything to do when the season was over and done with.

    1. That's something no one should ever do. Keep ties with others and have options so you aren't left in the dust.

    2. I'm sure he had friends if you go to any park to play basketball you will make friends. You don't even have to know these people most of the time you guys will still play a game together.

  9. A friend of mine centered their life around one other person, doing everything they could to make the other happy. Forgetting everything and everyone else; leaving their friends and their family. Everyone watched them drift away and not stay true to themselves. It made me really sad to see. Although this person clearly makes my friend happy, it’s never a smart idea to put all of your eggs in one basket. If something ever happens, they will be all on their own.

    1. My one friend is like that. I watched my friend as she drifted away with everyone, so that she could be with this other person. It was sad because once she drifted away, she began to change as well. Her attitude, physical appearance, and everything else was gone. She was completely different.

  10. I center most of my life around fishing. I cant go one day with out going fishing or even think about hooking a trout. It really dose interfere with my life a lot, it stops me from doing stuff at home or hanging out with my friends. But i love fishing an it will always be the center of my life

    1. That's interesting. What about fishing keeps you so interested?

      Delete
    2. I know people that are just like you, and it's not like you can't hang out with friends. Other people like fishing too, it just all depends if you like the other people that fish or not.

      Delete
    3. Have you ever thought about taking some of your friends fishing with you? If fishing interferes you spending time with your friends, then why don’t you ask them to tag along? It’s a win, win situation. You can fish and talk with your friends, while they spend time with you. You can also teach them how to fish.

  11. Sports is my life. That is what I center my whole life around. Ever since I was 4 years old I have been playing football. Years after that I started playing basketball. All I do is train and practice to better myself. Everyday I have if not one, then more than one practice or training per day. There is also a lot of emotional distress that comes with that. I am always trying to achieve greatness, as I am a perfectionist. Perfection is something impossible that I am always trying to pursue. Being an athlete I love to compete in anything. Even if I am playing a board game, I would like to win. Winning and success is stuck in my mind from sports. I have tattoos that talk about success, excellence and not being mediocre. Sports is the center of my life and makes up who i am.

    2. I like the fact that you are very competitive. Being an athlete myself I know where you are coming from. Without sports I don't know what I would do in my life. It is inspiring to see your dedication towards the game and doing what you love.

    3. Would you say playing sports is the center of you life, or is pursuing physical perfection you primary goal?

    5. I admire you a lot because I know how much effort you put in and how hard you work, but I feel like you sometimes you're to hard on yourself. Try having more fun during the games and while you play because at the end of the day is just that...a game! Once you start doing so I can assure you that you will have a lot more success than you already do.

  12. My life is centered around stretching my creative personality. I feel that i'm naturally creative since I like to draw a lot. I've been drawing since before I can remember. I also play guitar so I incorporate that creativity into my own unique style of playing. I'm constantly trying to find my own sound. I make up my own music a lot but never write any of it down since i'm not fully comfortable with the sound I get out of it since it sounds too similar to other artists. This is part of my OCD conflicting with the creative part of me which is a real drag sometimes but thats just how I am and I won't let anyone change that.

  13. My life is centered around two people and that is my mother and my grandmother! The thought of not being around them just makes me miserable, upset, and lost. Its like if I was attach to them which some may look at it like it’s a bad thing but I see it as if I’m really close to them. All my life chooses are based on what they think or how they are going to feel about it everything as to have their approval. Like for an example Its hard enough for me to make a choose of a college in the same state just a couple of miles away because I don’t want to go far away from them. But my dream has always been to have the opportunity to go out of the country and study my major but just the thought of not having them around give me nightmare. Without them in my life I wouldn’t know what to do or who I would be today! I am proud to say that they made me the person that I am today and I wouldn't change anything about it!

  14. I center myself around my dog shylow. “A dog is a mans bestfriend.” That is the truth. A dog doesnt judge you, It doesnt speak, not even ask anything in return. My dog will always be there. It may not speak but it will still support me when I need it. It knows when im down. It will keep me company, to make me not feel alone. My dog makes me laugh when it does something cute, like when she plays by herself with her toy. When I am bored I can play fetch with her in the field behind my house. The joyment of knowing she is happy will rub off on me making me happy. I have my dogs back and i know she has mine. I center myself next to my dog because its my bestfriend.

  15. I have centered myself around one goal this year, which is my goal to be accepted into the college of my dreams. This goal began in the beginning of the school year, when I went to visit The University of Pennsylvania. From the moment I arrived there, I knew that it was the college I wanted to attend. Many people have told me that it is a great school, but only 12% of applicants are accepted out of the 13,000 applicants. That fact worries me because I feel as if I'm not good enough to be accepted. My friends have told me that it’s silly to worry because I’m a junior so, why bother thinking about college now. My other friends, also have told me that I don’t have a chance in attending that college. The effects that it brings are that I try harder in school, and try to study as often as I can, but I always work so it makes it difficult. In addition, my goal does bring some downfalls to it, before I would always hang-out with my friends but now I barely see them. Achieving my goal, would be my way of proving everyone, who doubted me, wrong.

  16. I have never been the person to only focus on one thing because I feel like if I do that I’ll probably hurt someone else but most likely myself. My friend on the other hand wasn’t like me at all, she had a boyfriend and she thought EVERYTHING was about him and only for him. She used to buy him whatever, sneak him over all they time and ignore everyone for him including her family. It went so far that she ran away with him because her mom didn’t like how she was allover him too much because she knew he wasn’t a good guy and would leave eventually. Summer 2011 she went on vacation to go an visit her dad for a couple of days since she didn’t see him for almost a year after he moved away, when she came back home her boyfriend was no where to be found. A couple days passed and she found out he had another girlfriend and already got her pregnant! It was so horrible I felt really bad all she did was cry and cry but eventually got over it. That was a really long story but that teaches people a lesson not to only center your self on one thing, especially a girlfriend or boyfriend.

    1. Even though you sound kind of jealous to me,I have to agree with you. You shouldn't centered yourself on one thing only ;especially your girlfriend or boyfriend.

      Delete
    2. That's so true. I totally, 100%, agree with everything you wrote. I always think that but always end up somehow doing the total opposite and I don't know why. I feel like I'm too considerate for other people than myself. I'm going to copy & paste this, print it out, and hang it on my wall for future reference. :)

I have centered my life around sports since the beginning of high school. I love the sports I participate in, which are cross-country, swimming, and track. All the fun that accompanies these sports can take its toll on me, and it has. I have been so determined to get an award, something to acknowledge my achievements. This has led to me not being involved as much with my family. I regret not spending time with them because I have not been able to gain a better relationship with them. I wish to now build better relationships with them.
