The original American Dream was freedom from religious persecution, and the freedom to choose one’s vocation, different than that vocation that one’s parents did. For a example of the first part, try thinking of the many people with Islamic faith who live in this country, even though that religion is opposed by many others, on such matters as extremists claiming to represent that religion attacking this country. This is the best example for the first part because they are the perfect example of a group that is religiously persecuted here. I think that the best example for the second part would be a Mexican immigrant who had worked as a farmer in Mexico, and, after immigrating to the United States, became a doctor. This is due to that this hypothetical Mexican, due to being in America, got the opportunity to choose his own vocation. These are my ideas of a success story of the American Dream. What do you think?

    1. I agree about the original American Dream in your perspective, and the examples you used to prove your view were definitely good. But don't you think the "American Dream" has become tainted over the years? In retrospect your correct, but now people living in America think the American dream is fame and fortune, parties every night, and doing whatever they want. I think it's being able to live your own dreams, like you said, being able to choose one's vocation. I agree with you and hope others see the true meaning.

  2. Wow. Romeril's definition certainly fit the original description in that this was a land of opportunity and yet, Faletti, I too see how it has been unfortunately "tainted" rather dissolved to a materialistic dream. And unfortunately, it is only a "hope" that others DO ever "see the true meaning."
