In my honest opinion I don’t think that George did the right thing at all. Lennie is a mentally disabled man and he shouldn’t of been shot by George. Lennie had allot of things on his mind about the future. All Lennie wanted was to live a life with George and have a nice ranch. Do I think what Lennie did was right? No I don’t! Lennie shouldn’t of killed anything. Weather it was the mouse, the dog, or Curley’s wife. Lennie has some serious mental issues that he needs to get help for and George knows that! I don’t think that George was a hero nor do I think he was a coward. I feel that George didn’t know what to do with Lennie anymore. I feel that Lennie would still continue to mess up George’s life. I feel that George should’ve let Lennie get his punishment instead of killing Lennie himself. My other opinion is that George was putting Lennie out of his misery. Lennie didn’t really know what life was all about. All he basically knows is about rabbits and George. Those two are the only thing in life that Lennie actually knows. He forgets everything else! I think that George didn’t want Lennie to go through all the torture and the criticism in prison. I also think that Lennie would’ve been killed anyway by close relatives of Curley's wife.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I am in agreement with your post, I guess that means too, I am indecisive since you too understand his reasoning for shooting him and then don't agree with it. I guess the real question comes down to whether or not he is selfish.
DeleteDon’t you think that Curley would’ve killed him in a more gruesome manor? Curley would’ve tortured Lennie for killing his wife, Lennie wouldn’t have even made it to prison if Curley had anything to do with it. Lennie definitely didn’t deserve something like that from Curley because like you said, “All he basically knows is about rabbits and George.” Lennie didn’t know better, he just wanted to live life and tend rabbits. In my opinion, George did the right thing, and for all we know, Lennie could be tending his own rabbits now.
DeleteThis brings up the question, could anyone of you have done this in this same situation?
DeleteThat question has many different aspects to look at because this is a different time period, there are different social acceptances. Back then, there was a depression of course and they were basically on the streets just trying to find work. Also, guns weren't as frowned upon then as it is now. Many people had guns and it was a common thing to carry one, and use it for hunting and whatnot, people do hunt now, but it's definitely not the same as it was. I've personally never shot a gun other than on video games, my lifestyle is very different from what their lifestyle was. So looking at the situation, I probably wouldn't be able to do something like that, but you never really know until you are put into that situation.
DeleteI think George did the right thing. Curley was going to shoot Lennie anyway, so George wanted to be the one end it. “If you love something set it free” would fit with George. He didn’t want to hurt Lennie he loved him. I look at it as George helped Lennie. If Curley had found him, he would have suffered. George just put him out of his misery. It hurt George more than it hurt Lennie. It was good that George kept Lennie’s mind of him shooting him. He gave Lennie a wonderful memory before he killed him.
ReplyDeleteWhen you take on the responsibility of owning or taking care of a pet, you must feed it, keep it healthy, give it shelter and when the time comes, "put it out of its misery."
DeleteI believe that George didn't do the right thing as said above Lennie was mentally disabled he shouldn't have been shot at all by George nor any of the other men. I believe Lennie should've just been locked up if anything. Before George did it he gave Lennie a good memory or image of what they would/could have had so I believe that George did the wrong thing but he did it in a good way.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I think that Lennie should of taken the punishment for what he has done. I feel George did not want to kill Lennie but I feel he had to. Lennie is mentally disabled but I feel Lennie should of taken his punishment and not have George live the rest of his life with murder on his mind
DeleteSo was his killing about George's sanity or Lennie's?
DeleteI disagree because they wouldn't of locked him up. He would have been killed, whether it was by George, or not. It was a wise decision, George doing it, instead of someone else doing it.
DeleteGeorge did the right thing at the end of the book. Curly wanted to shoot Lennie with a shotgun "right in the gut" George knew that Lennie was not going to prison and he was gonna get killed and tortured by Curly and the other guys. George made a hard decision but he did the right thing. He shot Lennie so they won't be able to torture him. George helped Lennie by killing him himself with out letting Lennie feel pain. Lennie is mentally disabled but the only people that understood was George and Slim. George is heoric for helping Lennie trough out his whole life. He helped Lennie and got in alot of trouble but he never left Lennie alone. I think what George did is Heroic and it was the right thing to do.
ReplyDeleteSO TRUE! So many of us are forgetting how trouble Lennie was for SO LONG too! George didn't have to take him along with him and must be so lonely and depressed about not having the things in life he really wanted, since he chooses to have Lennie with him. I mean, what did Lennie actually do for George???
DeleteI think you made a good point. IF George wouldn't have killed him, Lennie would've continued to be a problem and probably harm other people and maybe even himself or George.
DeleteYeah that's true! Lennie was a problem for George, he put a lot of stress on George. Also, he would've caused even more problems with George and other people, if he was still alive.
DeleteI believe that George did the right thing by killing Lennie. Lennie had a hard time understanding things that was around him and the people around him. George had to take care of Lennie his whole life. George had to kill Lennie because Lennie was getting into to much trouble and not letting George have a life that he wanted. I think that George was heroic because he was saving Lennie’s life everyday and George was helping Lennie out by killing him. Lennie was mislabel he could be with the rabbits and his own place.
ReplyDeleteLennie is probably in "bunny heaven" now. But my question is, do you think that George would consider himself a hero?
DeleteI think that George does the right thing when it comes to defending Lennie. At times he does rough him up a bit, which i think isn't nice. At other times he has to be that way so that Lennie can understand. George is heroic because he always takes care of Lennie and himself when their in trouble, every time they need something George does what he has to do so that they can survive. I think maybe George did the right thing by killing Lennie because he didn't want to see his friend suffer and be tormented by the other men, so he took it into his own hands by putting Lennie out of his misery.
ReplyDeleteGeorge did the right thing in this situation. Lennie would have ended up dead anyway. All he did was kill things and harm people. George was always in a bad predicament because Lennie doesn't know how to act. Lennie killed Curly's wife and people were after him. George was heroic in courageous by his decision. He made Lennies death short and easy.It was also the right decision to make.
ReplyDeleteBut today, our justice system would find him "guilty" of premeditated murder and he would be on trail and sentenced for sure. hmmmmmm Does anyone find anything wrong with this?

ReplyDeleteI believe that George did he right thing. My reason being because if George wouldn't have done anything, things could have possibly gotten worse. Lennie can't control his actions. He doesn't realize what he's done until he's done it. If George wasn't the one to do what he did, then the whole scene wouldn't have been as calm as it was. George did the right thing in the most possible way he could. He didn't yell at Lennie and if he didn't care, he would have let the others kill him instead. He didn't want Lennie to die. He wanted him locked away. He knew what the right thing was to do. He didn't do it because it was best for Lennie, but best for everyone else.
ReplyDeleteI believe that he did well in killing Lennie himself. He did not want Lennie to suffer and the other just wanted him to give him torture Curly just wanted revenge for the wife dead and his hand. They did want him dead in a fast way. They said let hit him in the gut and George did not like that. He is heroic he was able to kill him only friend. He only had his dreams because of Lennie he wanted them to have a great future and only because nobody understands Lennie. I like that he was making him picture their house and how he going to tends all those rabbits and then he shot him in the head and Lennie did not know it was coming but he left picturing his house and his rabbit and tending them.
ReplyDeleteI agree but in a way, do you believe that George was rude for making Lennie believe the story of tending the rabbits at the end or do you believe that it was only a way to calm him down?
DeleteIn my opinion George did the right thing. George's decision to kill Lennie was understandable because he didn't want Lennie to suffer. Also Lennie didn't know it was coming because George had him distracted about the house and about him "tending the rabbits". George made Lennie's death simple and quick.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you when you say he did it to keep Lennie from suffering. I think that had George and Lennie had escaped, it would've only been a matter of time before something like this happened again and the next time Lennie might not have been so lucky.
DeleteGeorge did the right thing. Lennie is disabled and can't take care of himself. George sacrifices his time for Lennie and Lennie still ends up in trouble. Although he means no harm because he doesn't understand, it could be too much for one person to handle. He put Lennie out of misery. George would've had to hold himself back from accomplishing more things if he decided to let him live. Being with Lennie was already hard enough. George would be in trouble with Lennie and have to continue to change jobs. I give George a lot of respect for what he was doing for Lennie in the book. Also, I think that it would've made George feel miserable by letting someone else kill Lennie.
ReplyDeleteAnd let's not forget too, most likely, George even still feels guilty and has to live with having killed his own "best friend". I guess you can't win either way. When you choose to take care of someone else, you will end up with guilt either way!!
DeleteI belive that George knew that he had to be with Lennie this much and if he could keep all his close attention to him he shouldn't have took him to take care of him.
DeleteI think that George made the right decision. Yes, he doesn't know any better, but at the end of the day, that's what gets him into trouble. Yes, he has no control over that, but now George can find a job, without Lennie being in the way of messing it up. Everything that happened between George and Curly's wife was George's fault because he was't keeping an eye on Lennie. Then again, he can't do it all the time. Someone else killing Lennie, would have been a worse feeliing for George. Him doing it, I give him respect for that, before the others got to him. Not only his time, but George sacrificed everything for Lennie. He's done all that he could. What else is left to do ? His decision was understandable.
ReplyDeleteI belive that George did the right thing because he can do what he wants to do without the bother of Lennie. I think that it benifited Lennie too because he will not have to suffer through his wish's. I also think it helped Lennie because if they didn't get the ranch that they wanted Lennie would be very mad at George for not telling the truth.
ReplyDeleteI think Geroge made the right decision. Lennie might not have meant to hurt anyone but if he wouldn't have been stopped it would've happened again sooner or later. George did Lennie a favor by killing him. At least he died with his friend instead of possibly being tortured or imprisoned.
ReplyDeleteThis is very true because I think that if the other guys caught him he would have been tortured and they would of made him die a slow painful death.
DeleteI think George made the right decision on killing Lennie. Lennie never hurt someone cause he wanted to, he just didn't know what he was doing. But George can now go on in life and do stuff he wouldn't be able to do before with Lennie around. As Candy said to George i wish i would have killed my own dog. In the story Lennie follows George around just like a dog does. And George realized no one else would be able to kill Lennie cause it'll hurt him worst then just doing it himself.
ReplyDeleteI believe that George did the wrong thing. He didn’t have to kill Lennie; Lennie didn’t mean to hurt anyone or anything. Lennie was George’s friends and he was always there for George and George was there for Lennie, which is why I believe George didn’t do the right thing. I think it was semi selfish on his part, but at the same time it wasn’t. What he did put Lennie out from hurting himself, anyone, or anything ever again. It also helped George from trying to help Lennie out of trouble. Over all George is in the boat doing the wrong and right thing for everyone.
ReplyDeleteSomewhat contradicting.. I believe you would have a hard time writing this as a persuasive essay since you would have to choose one side or the other.
ReplyDeleteI think George did the right thing by killing Lennie instead of someone else killing Lennie. In the story, Candy’s dog was shot by another character and Candy felt guilty. George saw how guilty Candy was because he felt that he should have killed his own dog that he has been friends with for a long time. He felt that he shouldn’t have let some other stranger kill his dog. I feel that when George saw Candy guilty, he knew that he didn’t want to go through the same mistake that Candy did. If George let someone else kill Lennie, he would have felt guilty and possibly angry at the person who killed Lennie. George did the right thing by killing Lennie, since it was someone that was close to Lennie, than some other stranger killing him.
